On December 21, 1913, Arthur Wynne’s “word-cross”, the first crossword puzzle, was published in the New York World.

The photograph below, courtesy of the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division’s National Photo Company Collection, was made in 1925 and pictures a 100-years-old Ambrose Hines solving crossword puzzle.
